Euro 2012 – Don’t miss it.

Just what is going on here? Should we expect antics like this at Euro 2012? Whilst we are speechless, we certainly hope it will be as entertaining.

Just to recap here is the draw:

Group A: Poland, Greece, Russia, Czech Republic
Group B: Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Portugal
Group C: Spain, Italy, Republic of Ireland, Croatia
Group D: Ukraine, Sweden, France, England

And here are the top rivalries to expect to send tensions sky high

Poland and the Czech Republic: Poland beat their neighbour,  Czech Republic to qualify for the world cup in 2010. Expect the Czechs to be looking for revenge.

Czech Republic and Greece: With a 90th minute wonder header by Traianos Dellas, Greece knocked the Czechs out of the Euro 2004 semifinals when the Czechs were said to be favourites having won all their games up to this point. It looks like the Czechs have a few skeletons to exorcise from their cupboard.

Germany and the Netherlands: In the 1974 World cup final Germany beat Holland 1-0. The Dutch exacted revenge in the Euro 1988 semifinal and went on to win the tournament. In recent years the shoe has been on the Germans’ foot as they dominated in the 1990 World Cup last 16 and again in a recent friendly. Watch out, Holand has a score to settle!

Netherlands and Portugal: In 2006 one of the most contentious matches ever in the World cup was played. “The Battle of Nuremburg” saw Portugal victorious  following 4 red cards and 16 yellow cards!

Germany and Portugal: Portugal have painful recent memories of a 3-1 loss in the 2006 World Cup third place play-off, and another beating in Euro 2008.

Spain and Italy: A rip-roaring quarterfinal in 2008 saw a goalless draw, and a subsequent 4-2 win on penalties for Spain. Spain went on to win the tournament and come into 2012 as reigning champions.

Spain and Republic of Ireland: In 2002 Ireland came so close to beating Spain after a last minute equalizer. Spain eventually prevailed after a penalty shoot-out. Painful memories will be fresh in the Irish memory as the 2 teams face off again this June.

Ireland and Italy: Ireland performed a giant killing act, defeating Italy at home in the first round of the 1994 World Cup. Let’s see if they can cause an upset once again.

France and England: No explanation needed here. Age old rivals, England will be looking to avenge its most recent defeat at the hands of France in Euro 2004.
